ROLE SUMMARY

The Mega Event Team at UK Sport has the specific purpose of providing strategic oversight and leading the frontline implementation of UK Sport's strategy for Mega Events and UK Governments technical agency. Supporting the ambitions and working with partners it provides a range of support services; including:

  • supporting technical and financial feasibility requirements for strategic event hosting targets
  • support business case processes through DCMS
  • support (and in some cases lead on) bidding activity, including the development of event staging budgets, impact and benefit assessments; international relations campaigns and host city selection processes,
  • and; if successfully secured for the UK; oversee the management, distribution and assurance of funding to support mega event delivery.

This role will primarily focus on assuring the Government Grant and UK Sport’s Lottery investment into a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) which has been set up specifically to deliver the Tour de France and Tour De France Femmes 2027. The investment will be contracted via a funding agreement with UK Sport which this post holder will be required to manage. The role will be required to develop and maintain effective working relationships with partners and offer a practical can do attitude to issue resolution. There will be a need to operate strategically, technically, and with financial rigor. Youwill represent UK Sport on event subgroups – ensuring that good practice, ambition and broader strategic considerations are made.

As part of the Events Team, you will also offer specialist advice on Mega Event Hosting Targets – including budgets, benefit assessments, governance, commercial arrangements and assurance. You may also be required to manage additional events or projects for the broader activity of the Team.

The work undertaken is wide-ranging, interesting, and fast-paced and evolves throughout the mega event lifecycle but will always maintain a focus on producing high quality outputs and being agile to the needs of the partners.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical

You will:

  • be able to provide specialist technical staging advice to ensure effective and innovative delivery of world leading events that deliver quantifiable impacts.
  • have knowledge of the various stages of an event lifecycle including feasibility, bidding and operational delivery which will allow you to contribute to the teams overall work programme.

Financial

You will:

  • provide financial assurance against the recipients funding agreement to manage the HMG and / or UK Sport investment, ensuring that all contractual and reporting requirements are met.
  • have broader knowledge of event budgets that will allow you to support DCMS and HMT during their business case and fiscal event funding processes, as well as contributing to internal consideration of event hosting targets and funded events.

Strategic

You will:

  • provide industry insight and challenge to the Team and partners as required to ensure that UK Sport delivers in its role as an industry leader.
  • assess event hosting targets against a strategic framework, making recommendations that deliver the UK Sport strategy – Making Live Sport Matter.
  • be required to offer recommendations and action plans for scenarios as they arise.

System Support

You will:

  • maintain a network of contacts to ensure effective partnership working across all projects. Driving continuous development, improvement and knowledge transfer across the system
  • provide assurance to UK Sport in relation to its investment through effective risk reporting
  • support and be part of specialist projects that enhance the UK’s major event staging system, such as; knowledge transfer, data and impact; ethnical event delivery; social impact partnerships and EDI

You will establish and maintain positive and proactive working relationships with:

  • Sporting Partners including NGBs
  • Event Delivery Organisations
  • Contractors
  • Devolved Administrations
  • Host Cities
  • Team members

KEY SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & ATTRIBUTES

Essential

  • Experience of managing and assuring the investment of public money
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with multiple stakeholders including public partners
  • Experience of working in the management and operational delivery of a Major Event(s) in a senior role
  • Financial Literacy including budget development, management, cost forecasting & reporting
  • Excellent communication skills including effective report writing
  • A passion for working in major sport events
  • Experience of working with government departments
  • Experience of assessing risk and managing appropriate interventions
  • An effective team member with a can-do attitude and a willingness to contribute to achieve a common goal
  • Ability to work with senior colleagues – offering updates, recommendations and solutions. Providing briefings as required and being able to be briefed to deliver a task
  • The focus to work independently and manage your own workload with an ability to adapt in a fast-paced, changing environment
  • Project Management Experience
  • Computer literate, competent with MS Office packages

Desirable

  • Graduate calibre or equivalent experience
  • Experience of Cycling / Road events
  • Knowledge of international relations and global sporting structures
  • Experience of developing Green Book/Government Business Cases
  • Relevant and transferable experience in an area such as EDI, Social Impact, Sustainability, Monitoring and Evaluation
