About the Role

We are seeking a commercially experienced Independent Non-Executive Director to join the Swim England Trading Board.

You will provide independent oversight, strategic insight and constructive challenge, contributing to the company’s commercial growth, financial sustainability and effective governance.

Bringing an external perspective, you will support the development of products, partnerships and income-generating activities, including Learn to Swim Awards, events revenue and fulfilment operations.

Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Fulfil the legal responsibilities of a company Director.
  • Provide constructive support and challenge to the Chair and executive team.
  • Contribute to the company’s commercial strategy, plans and budgets.
  • Monitor commercial performance, financial sustainability and key risks.
  • Support sustainable income growth through products, services, events and partnerships.
  • Help develop and oversee commercial products and income-generating activities.
  • Evaluate significant commercial opportunities, investments and associated risks.
  • Ensure customer needs, market insight and service quality inform Board decisions.
  • Oversee operational matters presenting significant commercial, financial or reputational risk.
  • Support effective governance, accountability and collective decision-making.
  • Consider the relationship between Swim England Trading, Swim England and its other subsidiaries.
  • Promote equality, diversity and inclusion and support Swim England’s purpose and values.

About You

We are looking for someone with:

  • Experience gained through a senior leadership, executive, non-executive or professional role.
  • Experience contributing to commercial strategy, business growth or organisational performance.
  • An understanding of the legal duties and responsibilities of a company Director.
  • Strong commercial, analytical and strategic judgement.
  • The ability to interpret complex information and identify key opportunities and risks.
  • An understanding of commercial performance, customer insight and operational risk.
  • Excellent communication, influencing and relationship-building skills.
  • The confidence to contribute to robust but respectful debate.
  • High standards of integrity, transparency and ethical conduct.
  • A collaborative approach and commitment to collective responsibility.
  • A demonstrable commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.

Experience in commercial development, leisure, events, customer experience, retail, partnerships, marketing or business growth would be advantageous.

Additional Information

This is a voluntary appointment for an initial four-year term, with the possibility of a second four-year term.

There are four Board meetings each year, all held online. Travel and accommodation expenses will be paid in accordance with Swim England policy.
