Purpose
The Assistant Coach, Attack is responsible for leading and delivering world-class attacking systems and skill development for the NSW Waratahs men's program.
The role supports the Head Coach in implementing the NSW Waratahs game model and high-performance strategy through the development and execution of an innovative, adaptable and effective attacking framework that maximises player strengths and team performance.
The position provides technical expertise and leadership in attack, kicking strategy and transition play, while contributing to alignment, planning, player development and continuous improvement across the NSW Waratahs men's program.
Key Accountabilities
Rugby Program & Attack Coaching
- Support the Head Coach with the implementation of the NSW Waratahs Game Plan and guiding principles
- Assist in the development and delivery of annual and periodised coaching and training plans
- Design, implement and review attacking systems and frameworks in collaboration with other assistant coaches and high-performance staff
- Deliver coaching across team, unit and individual settings, including:
- Phase attack structures and shape
- Launch plays and first phase attack
- Transition attack
- Counter-attack strategy
- Kicking strategy and kick transition
- Breakdown attack and continuity
- Decision making and skill execution under pressure
- Attacking connection and link play
- Conduct opposition preview and analysis relevant to attack and game strategy
- Maintain accurate records of player reviews, training outcomes and performance feedback provided to players and the team
- Attend all matches, training sessions, camps and tours as required
Game Model & Program Alignment
- Ensure consistent application of the NSW Waratahs game model, terminology and attacking frameworks through the men’s program
- Collaborate with the Head Coach and other assistant coaches to align weekly plans and match preparation
- Work as part of a multidisciplinary team to align game model and training outcomes with athletic performance, medical and analysis performance goals
- Contribute to game reviews, debriefs and continuous improvement processes
- Ensure training design reflects the tactical and technical requirements of the NSW Waratahs game model
Player Development & Capability Building
- Deliver individual and unit development programs aligned to player needs and positional requirements
- Conduct regular player reviews and provide timely feedback
- Support the development of game understanding, decision making and leadership within the playing group
- Work closely the Performance Analysis staff to provide meaningful and bespoke learning opportunities for players
- Assist with the development of emerging talent and Academy players integrated into the men’s environment
- Encourage evidence based coaching practice, innovation and continuous learning
Selection, Depth Chart & Squad Planning
- Participate as a member of men’s program selection panels in accordance with selection policies
- Contribute to depth chart management and succession planning
- Support recruitment discussions relating to positional requirements and player profiles through the provision of technical assessment and recommendations relating to attacking capabilities and player potential
- Assist with aligning match day selection, training priorities and long-term player development needs
Stakeholder Engagement & Administration
- Maintain and promote NSW Waratahs values, standards and behaviours at all times
- Support sponsorship, commercial and media commitments as required
- Provide reporting and technical input for high-performance reviews and annual planning
- Contribute to end of season reviews and personal development planning
- Assist with logistics and operational requirements at trainings and matches as requested
Systems, Data & Innovation
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of an attack coaching database, including drills, frameworks and learning resources
- Work collaboratively with Performance Analysis and Athletic Performance staff to translate data and insights into coaching practice
- Explore and implement innovative coaching methodologies and emerging trends within the game
Capabilities, Experience & Qualifications
Capabilities
- Strong understanding of modern attacking frameworks and game models
- High level knowledge of kicking strategy, transition play and attacking principles
- Ability to analyse opposition, performance trends and game data and translate insights into coaching practice
- Strong understanding of decision making, skill acquisition and player learning principles
- Exposure to Super Rugby, international rugby or elite pathway competitions
Experience
- Demonstrated experience as an assistant or specialist coach within a professional rugby program
- Proven ability to design and implement attacking systems and frameworks
- Experience developing and delivering periodised coaching programs across a competitive season
- Experience working collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary high-performance team
- Proven ability to design and deliver periodised coaching and training plans across a competitive season
- Experience conducting individual player reviews and development processes
- Evidence of contributing to talent identification, recruitment and succession planning processes
Qualifications
Required
- World Rugby Level 3 Coaching Accreditation (or an equivalent international qualification)
- Current SmartRugby / Rugby Australia safety accreditation (or the ability to obtain)
- Current First Aid and CPR certification (or the ability to obtain)
- Working With Children Check and any other compliance requirements relevant to professional rugby environments
- 3 plus years’ experience working in international or professional rugby environments
Desired
- World Rugby Level 4 / High-Performance Coach accreditation
- Formal leadership, management or coach development training
- 5 plus years’ experience working within a professional or international rugby environment
