We are writing a new chapter for professional sport in the region and are seeking an outstanding Senior Physiotherapist to join our team in delivering our ambition.

The Role:

The Senior Physiotherapist will deliver elite-level clinical management to first-team players at both training and fixtures as part of a multi-disciplinary team that is working at the cutting-edge of professional sport. They will ensure consistently high standards of medical provision and care through comprehensive therapy support, pro-active engagement in injury prevention strategies and delivering an excellent level of service during injury rehabilitation processes to return players to optimal health, fitness and well-being.

The role is critical in enabling Newcastle Red Bulls to consistently compete at the highest level and will suit an individual who combines technical excellence with strong inter-personal skills and a personal drive for improvement and progress within a fast-paced professional environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Work alongside other medical experts in the department to meet agreed objectives and KPIs and in conjunction with other departments as part of a multi-disciplinary team to drive performance standards.

• Make accurate injury assessments and clinical diagnoses based on sound medical and ethical judgement to support the health, fitness and well-being of players.

• Adopt a pro-active approach to player welfare, including reducing injury risks by considering risk factors such as injury history, physiological markers and performance tests to inform decision making.

• Report to the Head of Medical Services and Head Physiotherapist daily to provide updates on injured players and to consult on any new injuries that may require further investigation.

• Deliver screening and injury prevention measures and attend external medical appointments as required by the Head Physiotherapist.

• Plan, deliver and review comprehensive injury prevention and rehabilitation programmes for players that are aligned with their individual needs, based on objective markers and have accurate return-to-play time frames.

• Provide pitch-side medical cover for players at fixtures and training sessions, making critical decisions regarding player fitness and availability and providing accurate triage assessments.

• Work closely with athletic performance staff and coaches to transition injured players safely back into training, modifying activity where appropriate, handing over programmes and directing any ongoing modifications.

• Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical notes on the central database for each player, communicate these to relevant staff in a timely manner and deputize for the Head Physiotherapist when required.

• Contribute and engage with in-service training to ensure high levels of performance and adherence to minimum standards as well as progressive thinking to be at the forefront of elite medical performance.

• Uphold and promote adherence to all PRL, RFU and World Rugby regulations, standards and ethical practices to represent the club professionally and transparently, including any industry-specific regulations.

• In addition to these duties which this job normally entails the employee may from time to time be required to undertake reasonable additional or other duties or participate in research and development projects.

Person Specification:

Qualifications and Experience

• BSc (Hons) degree in Physiotherapy or equivalent.

• Must be registered with relevant professional body (e.g. HCPC / CSP).

• Significant experience working in a full-time elite level professional sporting environment.

• RFU Level 3 PHICIS qualification or equivalent (desirable).

• Experience working in a full-time elite-level rugby environment (desirable).

Skills and Attributes

• Very strong clinical skills with the ability to accurate assess, diagnose and treat a wide range of complex sporing injuries.

• Strong inter-personal communication skills with both athletes and staff, and the ability to work collaboratively across multi-functional departments to drive best practice.

• Growth mindset and the ability to continually evolve practices around return to play frameworks, dovetailing with the performance department to drive positive change.

• Desire to develop sustainable practices across the medical department and positively contribute towards a dynamic and fast-paced working environment.

• Understanding of sports medicine, human performance and the demands of elite level rugby union.

• Understanding of minimum operating standards, compliance and governance in elite level sport.

• Willing and able to adapt to varied schedules, including unsociable hours and undertake travel as required by the role.
