Middlesex Tennis is looking for a qualified legal professional to join its Board as Legal Trustee.
The Role
Middlesex Tennis is the official county association and registered charity responsible for administering, promoting and developing tennis and padel across north, west and parts of east London.
The Board is made up of up to 12 voluntary Trustees, each with a specific role, who collectively take legal, financial and strategic responsibility for the charity. It is an exciting time to join, as the charity diversifies its fundraising, develops its approach to padel and works towards its 2028–2031 strategy.
The Legal Trustee provides strategic oversight and a legal perspective to help the charity identify, assess and manage legal risk – acting as a sounding board for commercial growth across sponsorship contracts, funding agreements and facilities hire, while keeping the charity’s mission at the heart of every decision.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as a ‘strategic critical friend’ to the Chair, Board and professional team
- Explain legal risks, point out hidden liabilities and support informed commercial decisions
- Guide the Board on intellectual property, data protection and general commercial law
- Signpost more complex issues to the right area of law, and scope and instruct pro bono or paid legal support where needed
- Form a Legal Advisory Group if required
About You
- A qualified solicitor or barrister (practising or retired)
- A background in commercial, corporate, contract, property or charity law is highly desirable
- Able to translate complex legal terms into plain, accessible language
- Strong analytical skills, independent judgement and a commitment to the charity’s values
Key Details
- Location: Middlesex (north, west and parts of east London)
- Role: Voluntary trustee position, responsible to the Middlesex Tennis Chair
- Time commitment: Ideally 2–6 hours per month, plus up to 8 in-person meetings a year
- Term: Minimum of 2 years (9-year term limit)
