About the role
We are currently seeking a Junior Sous Chef who is looking for a new opportunity to showcase their culinary skills and creativity. In this role you will support the Sous Chef and Senior Sous Chef in delivering consistent, high-quality food offer across all kitchen operations.
The Junior Sous Chef will supervise sections during preparation and service, support the development of junior team members, maintain excellent standards of food safety, hygiene and presentation, and contribute to a positive, organized and efficient kitchen environment. The role will also assist with stock control, ordering, menu execution and the smooth delivery of matchday, event and day-to-day catering requirements.
What will you be doing?
- Support the delivery of the highest possible levels of customer care and service in all kitchens and back-of-house areas.
- Prepare, cook and present dishes to agreed specifications, standards and timings.
- Lead assigned kitchen sections during preparation and service, ensuring food quality, consistency and presentation are maintained.
- Ensure all mise en place is completed accurately and on time for service.
- Supervise and support Commis Chefs, Chef de Parties and casual kitchen team members as required.
- Coach and encourage junior colleagues, sharing skills and good practice during day-to-day operations.
- Maintain excellent standards of food hygiene, allergen control, health and safety, cleaning and safe working practices.
- Carry out and record food temperature checks, delivery checks and other due diligence records in line with company procedures.
- Ensure food is stored, labelled and rotated correctly in line with food safety requirements.
- Assist with stock control, ordering, waste management and cost awareness as directed by senior chefs.
- Support menu development, tastings and the delivery of new dishes under the guidance of senior chefs.
- Maintain awareness of accident reporting, maintenance fault reporting, fire procedures and departmental health and safety requirements.
- Cover duties across sections when required due to business levels, holidays, illness or staffing requirements.
- Contribute to a professional, organised and positive kitchen culture, supporting colleagues across catering operations.
Who are we looking for?
- Previous experience as a Chef de Partie or similar role in a busy, high-quality kitchen environment.
- Strong practical cooking skills with the ability to work confidently across multiple sections.
- Ability to supervise, motivate and support junior team members during preparation and service.
- Good knowledge of food safety, allergens, COSHH, health and safety and safe working practices.
- Basic Food Hygiene qualification or equivalent.
- Excellent organisation, communication and time-management skills.
- Ability to remain calm, focused and professional in a pressured kitchen environment.
- Flexible approach to working hours, including evenings, weekends and event days.
Desirable:
- Advanced Food Hygiene qualification or willingness to work towards it.
- Experience in stadium, events, hotel, contract catering or high-volume hospitality operations.
- Knowledge of menu composition, recipe standards and food presentation trends.
- Understanding of purchasing, stock control, waste control and basic kitchen cost awareness.
- Experience supporting training, mentoring or development of junior chefs.
- Confident communicator with the ability to build effective working relationships across kitchen and front of house teams.
