The Role

We are looking for a medical doctor to become our Head of Sports Medicine at Manchester City Academy. Working alongside our Head of Academy Physiotherapy, this role leads sports medicine provision across the Academy, with responsibility for medical governance, clinical quality and risk management. You will set the tone for how care is planned, delivered and reviewed, making sure the Academy benefits from a coherent approach to diagnosis, treatment, referral and ongoing player welfare.

Working closely with Academy physiotherapists, doctors and wider multidisciplinary colleagues, you will oversee injury and illness management, quality assure clinical decision making and coordinate match-day medical support. You will also line manage, mentor and support permanent and casual doctors, helping ensure provision remains consistent, responsive and aligned to the needs of the pathway.

As part of the Academy Performance Management Team, you will contribute to strategic and operational planning across the performance support environment, including budget oversight and system-wide collaboration with wider sports medicine colleagues. The role suits someone who combines high standards with humility, clear communication and a genuine commitment to collaborative working in a safeguarding-led environment.

What You’ll Bring

  • Full registration with the General Medical Council.
  • Demonstrated advanced competency in clinical examination, functional assessment and medical management of sports injury and illness.
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary team delivering medical services in high performance sport.
  • Significant experience of providing medical services to high performance athletes.
  • Experience working with young adults in elite sport.
  • Ability to lead collaboratively, mentor others and adapt practice when clinical or operational needs change.
