About the Role
The NRL Sports Scientist is responsible for the development, implementation, and optimisation of athlete monitoring technologies to enhance performance, manage training loads, and support athlete availability. The role integrates performance data, technology, and applied sports science practices to provide actionable insights for coaches, athletes, and performance staff. The position also plays a key role in leveraging AI and automation tools to streamline reporting processes and improve efficiency across the performance department.
This is a full-time position on a fixed-term contract. Due to the nature of professional sport, weekend work, travel, and flexible hours will be required throughout the season.
Key Responsibilities
- Collect, manage, and analyse athlete performance and wellness data to support informed decision-making
- Lead the operation and interpretation of athlete monitoring technologies including Catapult GPS and load monitoring systems, VALD performance testing systems, GymAware velocity-based training tools and 1080 Motion software
- Assist in the planning and delivery of speed and conditioning prescription utilising ASR & muscle fibre typology of athletes
- Produce clear and actionable reports for coaches, medical staff, and athletes
- Work collaboratively with coaches and performance staff to monitor athlete readiness, fatigue, recovery, and performance trends
- Use AI and automation tools to streamline reporting workflows, improve data visualisation, and enhance operational efficiency
- Develop dashboards and reporting systems that simplify complex data into practical performance insights
- Support return-to-play and performance optimisation strategies through evidence-based monitoring processes
- Maintain data integrity, quality control, and consistent reporting standards across the department
- Foster partnership with Griffith University regarding student placements and research opportunities

Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Sports Science, Exercise Science or related field
- Minimum 3 years experience working in elite or high-performance sport environments
- Demonstrated experience using and analysing data from platforms such as Catapult, VALD and GymAware
- Experience developing athlete monitoring systems and performance reporting frameworks
- Understanding of data visualisation platforms and reporting tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI, Tableau)
- Experience integrating AI or automation processes into sports science workflows is highly desirable
