Due to the recent promotion of our current team doctor to the England Men’s senior team, we are delighted to advertise the part-time role of Gloucester Rugby Men’s Team Doctor. We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled physician to join our performance team. Gloucester Rugby Performance Department is an inclusive and welcoming environment, providing opportunities for personal and professional growth within a supportive environment.

  • Deliver a high standard of medical provision to the senior playing squad alongside other members of the medical team in conjunction with the Head of Medical Services.
  • Build excellent relationships with all members of club staff (including but not limited to medical, performance, rugby ops, coaching and support staff) where you become a proven team player and ego is left at the door.
  • Fulfil the role of Mental Health Lead for Gloucester Rugby.
  • Fulfil the role of medical Clinical Governance Lead for Gloucester Rugby.
  • Supported by the Head of Medical Services – conduct and collate information for injury update meetings and appropriately support the delivery of this information to the Director of Rugby & other members of senior staff when required.
  • Use excellent clinical skills in the assessment, diagnosis and management of injuries sustained by members of the senior men’s playing squad.
  • Be an exceptional individual and become a proven team player within the Gloucester Rugby Medical and wider Rugby department.
  • Liaise closely with the Head of Medical Services regarding department strategy, direction and continuing departmental success.
  • Be available and easily contactable when away from the club to discuss acute illnesses and give advice to full-time club medical staff.
  • Be responsible for the clubs medicine management policy.
  • Provide pitch side Team Doctor cover for all senior men’s matches as required (no less than 50% in conjunction with current pool of casual club doctors).
  • Support the academy doctor within their role and ensure all academy fixtures are appropriately covered.
  • Build an excellent rapport with other members of the medical and performance team with a positive outlook, energy and excellent work ethic.
  • Ensure all club medical equipment is adequately stocked, up to date and properly maintained in line with Prem Rugby and RFU standards of practice.
  • Maintain contemporaneous and detailed clinical notes on all aspects of injury management using the Kitman Labs intelligence platform, in line with GMC and RFU minimum working standards.
  • Be actively involved with pre-season player screening and new player entry medicals.
  • Be responsible for ensuring all Gloucester Rugby players have an up-to-date cardiac screen and ensure any follow up is completed.
  • Keep up to date with best practice, maintain personal CPD and contribute enthusiastically to the Gloucester Rugby Medical Department CPD program.
  • Have the ability and show willingness to carry out other duties within your capabilities as required by club management.
  • To actively contribute to club culture as outlined by senior management and the Director of Rugby.
  • Assist in the development and mentorship of other members of the medical team, both within the senior and academy teams.

Qualifications

Essential

  • License to practice medicine in the United Kingdom.
  • MSc. or Diploma in Sports Medicine.
  • Membership to the General Medical Council (GMC) and Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine (UK).
  • Current and up to date qualification in Pre-Hospital Immediate Care in Sport – Level 3 (or equivalent)
  • A good character, with a strong commitment to developing both yourself and others.
  • Possess exceptional sports medicine skills with the ability to apply these skills to the performance environment.
  • Exceptional level of communication skills in written and verbal forms.
  • Previous experience as a Team Doctor in professional sport.

Desirable

  • Previous experience as a Team Doctor working in elite level rugby union.
  • Previous experience in acute/ emergency medicine.
  • Qualification and experience using diagnostic ultrasound (MSK) in a performance medicine setting.
  • Experience in injection therapy (MSK) and its use within performance medicine.
