Role Summary: The main purpose of the role is to support the Pathway Science Team in the delivery of Sport Science across the Performance Pathway, and in the scoping and development of performance or sport science related projects. They will be required to possess specific knowledge and experience of supporting young developing athletes, have an ability to work closely with coaches to integrate practice and experience in delivering project-based work.

Main Areas of Responsibility:

1. Delivery of age and stage appropriate Sport Science through the Live, Train, Compete Curriculum to Performance Pathway Programmes aimed at gymnasts.

Typical Activities:

  • Support the delivery of the Live, Train, Compete Curriculum to gymnasts primarily on the Acrobatic, Aerobic, Double Mini Trampoline, Tumbling, Team Gym & Rhythmic disciplines. This includes the embedding of performance behaviours (e.g., warm-up, recovery, fuelling), and workshop delivery of educational content such as strength and conditioning, nutrition and performance lifestyle.
  • Support the Pathway Science team and Coaches to plan annual delivery of Sport Science across the pathway programmes.
  • Liaise and co-ordinate delivery by other staff where required delivery is outside their field of expertise.
  • Deliver educational workshops to coaches and parents when required.
  • Support with the continual embedding of Reform 25 policies and associated resources across the performance pathway.

2. Support the scoping and resource development of performance or sport science related projects.

Typical Activities;

  • With the support of the Pathway Science team, liaise with the wider Performance team to identify, scope and deliver selected sport science or performance projects.
  • Develop supporting sports science or targeted performance project resources (e.g., documents, infographics, explainer videos, social media etc.) when required.

The Person

The role will require the holder to work some Evenings & weekends as required to meet the needs of the role..

1. Knowledge, Skills and Expertise

This role requires the holder to have:

  • Undergraduate (preferably Postgraduate) sport science qualification.
  • Evidence of supporting young athletes (e.g. teaching or coaching).
  • MSc or recognised qualification (CSCS, ASCC) in sports science or related area (strength and conditioning, or physiology areas would be preferrable).
  • Knowledge and the ability to apply basic sports science principles.
  • Ability to work in a team and independently within a multidisciplinary Sports Science context.
  • Experience of creating and delivering engaging educational content across a range of situations.
  • Ability to engage with young athletes to develop good performance behaviours.

In addition, the role holder will be required to demonstrate a broad range of skills including:

  • Strong communication skills for listening/engaging, building relationships, attending and contributing to meetings and the production /delivery of presentations and resources.
  • Basic IT skills for reporting, administration and developing engaging presentations/resources.

2. People

This role requires the holder be the ‘on the ground’ delivery for sports science across the Performance Pathway. They will therefore be able to interact with Parents, Coaches and Gymnasts with equal ease and be able to adapt their style and methods to suit the needs of the audience.

The holder of this role will be able to think and to communicate on a delivery level with other departments and partners (e.g. UKSI) with regards to influencing resources.

3.Shaping Direction

The holder of this role will be proactive and use their initiative in order to plan and deliver Sport Science within the Performance Pathway whilst remaining cognisant of future trends and being able to influence and adapt accordingly.

This role requires the holder to be effective with regards to forward planning activities and to maximise all available resources, both financial and human.

From this programme the role holder will plan and monitor own workload on a weekly /monthly basis under the guidance of the Pathway Support Lead.

4. Developing Solutions

This role requires the holder analyse and resolve a number of problems/issues on a regular basis in relation to local delivery and department plans; how best to plan and implement them; who should/needs to be involved; how success will be measured and sustained.

In addition, the role holder will be required to use their initiative and be creative whilst looking for new ways of improving services including:

  • Supporting new opportunities and advocating/raising the profile of opportunities
  • Working with the Performance Pathway Team and key Performance Team colleagues to ensure consistency of programmes and clear alignment across the Performance Pathway
  • Collating data and feedback for the ongoing development of the programme delivery

5. Decision Making

This role requires the holder to make decisions in relation to their own work programme and through insight and feedback make recommendations in relation to:

  • Specific projects
  • Improvements to Performance Pathway Programmes
  • Solutions for challenges and issues

6. Communicating

This role requires the holder to inform and obtain information from colleagues/stakeholders and establish effective and meaningful business relationships with a broad range of partners and organisations. It is expected that the role holder will possess:

  • Communication skills for listening/engaging, relationship building with a range of stakeholders, leading/attending meetings and the productions/delivery of presentations and resources.
  • Diplomacy and negotiation skills for dealing with a range of both internal and external business clients

For the role to succeed, communication and interpersonal skills will be key to delivering formal presentations, contributing at or leading a range of meetings/working groups; collating data/feedback and writing reports; networking and influencing external partners and championing projects and interventions
