Bath Rugby is one of the iconic clubs in professional rugby union, with a proud heritage of success through the 1980s and 1990s. The club won an historic treble in 2025, turned a profit in its most recent and is now poised to enter its next exciting period with a renewed focus on rugby success, commercial growth and the transformation of its historic home at the Rec with the new stadium development project.
Bath Rugby is seeking an experienced Finance Director to lead the finance function, to act as a key commercial partner to the CEO and senior leadership team, and to contribute to leading the club through this critical phase
The Role
This is a role for a dynamic, engaging, commercially minded and adaptable FD. Bath Rugby is an organisation where the requirements of the role and the Club’s reputation and brand far exceed the scale of its financial operations. The successful candidate will demonstrate the right attributes to thrive in this environment in an important leadership role for the Club.
This is a senior leadership position requiring both technical financial rigour and commercial, strategic and interpersonal skills to influence decisions across rugby operations, commercial, and the Board.
Core responsibilities of the role will include:
- Develop and own the Club's financial strategy, aligned to the CEO's and Board's vision for sporting and commercial success.
- Lead annual budgeting, quarterly reforecasting, and longer-term financial planning (3–5 year models).
- Provide financial appraisal of major decisions: stadium redevelopment, strategic opportunities and investment plans (rugby and commercial), stadium/facility investment, sponsorship deals, and new revenue streams.
- Act as a trusted advisor to the CEO and SLT on financial risk, opportunity, and performance.
- Lead on the business planning and financial reporting and controls for the stadium development project.
- Oversee preparation of monthly management accounts, cash flow forecasts, and Board reporting packs.
- Ensure the delivery of budgeted financial performance, both P&L and cashflow.
- Own the Club's salary cap submissions and ongoing compliance, working closely with the Head of Rugby and Head of Recruitment on contract structuring.
- Partner with the Commercial, Marketing and Revenue Directors on pricing, sponsorship contract structuring, and revenue forecasting for ticketing, hospitality, retail, partnerships and other income streams; helping to maximise opportunity and minimise risk.
- Prepare clear, decision-ready financial papers for Board, sub-committee and SLT meetings.
- Manage Board company secretarial duties and legal compliance.
- Lead, develop, and manage the finance team, ensuring capability and resilience.
- Oversight of the HR & People function through management of the Head of HR and oversight of their implementation of Club wide HR & People Plan including the deployment of robust processes and policies in particular with regard to Safeguarding.
- Champion a culture of financial discipline and accountability across the Club, including with non-finance budget holders
The Person
The ideal candidate will be able to offer the following key skills and experience:
- Significant experience at FD level (or equivalent finance leadership position within a larger business) within a fast moving and dynamic organisation.
- Demonstrable experience and exposure in best-practice organisations, together with experience of working in a fast-paced SME environment is strongly desirable.
- Strategically and commercially focused, demonstrating strong judgement and influencing capabilities and with the ability to translate financial information for non-finance stakeholders. A qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA or CIMA) with excellent techncial, analytical and project management skills.
- Hands-on and pragmatic — willing to be close to the detail while also operating strategically with the CEO and SLT.
- Standards driven with exceptional attention to detail. High level of personal integrity and discretion, particularly given the sensitivity of player remuneration data.
- Commitment, drive and a naturally proactive approach.
- High levels of emotional intelligence and strong people skills to motivate and maximise performance of all team members, and influence peers and other stakeholders.
- Genuine passion for, or willingness to immerse in, the culture of professional rugby.
- Experience in the sport or leisure sector would be an advantage but is not essential.
- Experience of capex development projects and strategic planning would be an advantage.
- A flexible approach including the need to be present on match day
