World Sailing, the world governing body for the sport of sailing, is seeking a dedicated and skilled Technical Specialist to join our team.

Reporting to: Technical Manager

Location: Based at World Sailing headquarters in London, UK/hybrid, and some international travel requirements

Starting: Immediate start or as early as possible

Salary Range: £35-37.5K (based on experience)


World Sailing is the world governing body for the sport of sailing, officially recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). As an International Federation, World Sailing is responsible for promoting the sport, managing sailing at the Olympic and Paralympic Games, and the regulation and development of the sport worldwide.

The principle members of World Sailing are the 147 Member National Authorities (MNAs) and more than 100 Class Associations within the sport.

Our mission is to make sailing more exciting and accessible for everyone to participate or watch and use our reach and influence to create a sustainable future for our sport and the waters of the world.

In this role, you will play a pivotal part in ensuring the integrity of our sport through quality standards, regulations, and procedures. You will work closely with World Sailing classes and manufacturers to support, manage, and control the production and certification of sailing equipment worldwide.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support to Equipment Manufacturers and World Sailing Classes,
  • Manage Class Rules and Building Specification Changes,
  • Perform equipment and documentation reviews at manufacturing sites internationally,
  • Control world-wide production of equipment maintaining reporting methods for manufacturers to monitor production, certification and tracking of equipment.
  • Generate detailed reports on quality control findings, trends, and recommendations.
  • Manage the approval process of new manufacturers, new production tooling and changes to building specifications, and manage the approval processes for licensed manufacturers.
  • Liaise with World Sailing Classes and International Measurers regarding rules, regulations and associated control processes,
  • Maintain World Sailing In-House Equipment Certification (IHC) Programme
  • Maintain World Sailing Equipment Registration Processes
  • Monitor and promote World Sailing’s 2030 Sustainability Agenda commitments among World Sailing Classes and their manufacturers.
  • Provide full support to the following; Equipment Committee; Equipment Rules Sub-Committee; Oceanic and Offshore Committee; World Sailing Classes Committee; International Measurer’s Sub-Committee

Personal Attributes & Experience

  • Knowledge of sailing’s equipment key performance factors.
  • Knowledge of equipment manufacturing processes and materials.
  • Quality control procedures and tools.
  • Knowledge of the Equipment Rules of Sailing, Racing Rules of Sailing, World Sailing Regulations and Class Rules.
  • Experience around sailing events.
  • Previous involvement in sailing through any technical capacity. (i.e. coaching, naval architecture, performance optimization, manufacture, measurement)
  • Excellent written and verbal English language skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Good communication ability, both verbal and in writing (technical and non-technical)
  • Interest and involvement in the sport of sailing.
  • Completely comfortable working irregular hours and traveling internationally.
  • Ambitious with a ‘can do’ attitude.
  • Organized, methodical and thorough individual.
  • Constant improvement driven.
  • A willingness to learn new skills and develop existing competencies.
  • Second international language encouraged.
  • Computer literacy including MS Office and database experience.
  • 3D Scanning, CAD, and PolyWorks or equivalent experiences is a plus.
  • Metrology, Data Analysis, Statistical Data Control is a plus.
