Are you passionate about sailing and coaching? Do you want to develop the next generation of Western Australian sailors? The Western Australian Institute of Sport is looking for a Head Coach to lead the WAIS Sailing Program.

About the role

The Head Coach - Sailing will lead the WAIS Sailing program in supporting talented sailors to develop the attributes required to becomes successful world-class sailing athletes in targeted classes, aligned to Australian Sailing’s national strategy.

The Head Coach will be accountable for the progression of WAIS Sailors towards Australian Sailing Team selection, with a focus on 470, ICLA 6, ICLA 7, IQ Foil, and Kite Foil. In doing so, they will lead the interdisciplinary collaboration of the WAIS Sailing Program performance enhancement team.

The Head Coach Sailing will support WA pathway initiatives including coach mentoring and engagement, and talent identification.

Core duties will include:

  • Coach WAIS Sailors with accountability for the progression of scholarship athletes towards Australian Sailing Team selection.
  • Create and foster a world-leading development environment for sailors.
  • Deliver effective individual athlete performance plans for WAIS sailing athletes that support their progress towards identified goals.
  • Lead the interdisciplinary collaboration of the sport program Performance Enhancement Team.
  • Provide technical leadership in support of the Australian Sailing pathway in WA.
  • Line management of the WAIS Pathway Coach – Sailing, and specialist contract coaches.

The role is based out of the WAIS High Performance Service Centre in the Mt Claremont Sporting Precinct and Fremantle Sailing Club. Some domestic travel will be required.

About you

We are looking for an enthusiastic coach with the proven ability to develop sailors to a senior international level. You will have sound knowledge of contemporary issues associated with high-performance sport and the development of elite athletes for success in the national and international arena.

Experience and qualification requirements:

  • Proven track record of successfully progressing athletes to achieve national and international benchmarks
  • Demonstrated experience in a high-performance environment coaching, developing and motivating Junior and Elite level athletes
  • Track record of building partnerships that achieve shared outcomes with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Experience working within and providing leadership to coaching networks and multidisciplinary team of professionals and experts
  • Appropriate Coaching qualification/licence as defined by Australian Sailing.
  • Boat safety licence
  • Working with Children Check
  • National Police Clearance (valid within the last 12 months)
  • No Doping Declaration compliant
  • First Aid qualification

This is a fixed term contract through to the 2024 Olympic Games, with the potential to extend to the 2028 Olympic cycle. Anticipated salary is from $90,524 - $107,942 + Superannuation and will be negotiated with the successful candidate.
