Role Summary

The role of Head of Hockey will be responsible for delivering and developing the University’s flagship hockey programme, working with the next generation of emerging talent to succeed across our BUCS and National Hockey League teams. The successful candidate will have overall responsibility for the hockey programme, including coaching philosophy, style, development and performance of the club, including the appointment and development of coaching staff. They will have direct responsibility for the performance of the 1st and 2nd teams in BUCS and of our National Hockey League teams, including direct coaching our National league teams. From the point of recruitment to maintaining the fantastic performance environment for our athletes, the post-holder will ensure a high-quality student experience is maintained throughout the club, steering a culture consistent with our values. They will do this working with a team of experienced coaches and multi-disciplinary team comprising specialist support practitioners within a sector-leading dual-career environment.

Main Duties

  • Programme Management
  • Coach our Men’s & Women’s National League 1st teams and lead the coaching teams of the BUCS 1st & 2nd teams, attending matches for teams
  • Lead regular multi-disciplinary team meetings with the Performance Support team to optimise development of the players and team performance
  • Lead hockey’s recruitment strategy to attract the best players to the university, including identification of players, managing communications and attending key recruitment events
  • Responsible for the recruitment, development and management of hockey coaches including mentoring, individual CPD plans, reviews and job chats
  • Identify and propose appropriate hockey events which the University might bid to host, with the aim of helping recruitment, raising profile and/or generating income
  • To develop effective links and relationships with GB Hockey and home nations NGB to ensure player pathways are successfully maintained

Club Management

  • Work with the club development team to ensure University of Birmingham meets all relevant rules and regulations including, but not limited to: officials; safety; facilities; and coordination of disciplinary cases.
  • In conjunction with the BUCS administrator, ensure the efficient coordination of Hockey Club fixtures (BUCS and National League), including liaison with the Operations team to support match day set-up
  • Lead and advise the club committee in the management of the club, ensuring all values Sport are upheld.
  • Maintaining accurate records relating to budget income and expenditure, and supporting the student committee to achieve budget targets

Other duties

  • You will actively participate in job chats and personal development reviews on your own performance, and agree objectives and targets and work to achieve these within agreed timescales
  • Undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required and which can be accommodated within the postholder's grading

Person Specification


  • An in-depth understanding of BUCS and National Hockey League rules and regulations.
  • A good understanding of the HE hockey landscape /university admissions alongside the demands of prospective student athletes.
  • Good understanding of GB Hockey/home nation’s competition structures and delivery methods.
  • Knowledge of student sport and the complexities of working in a student environment, especially the dual-career HE pathway
  • Demonstrates consistent current good practice in relation to a sports Duty of Care for athletes.
  • Understands the issues and policies in clean sport and works to the highest degree of integrity in relation to this issue.
  • Is aware of current good practice in safeguarding in sport and acts at all times within the regulatory framework.
  • Understands and demonstrates individual responsibility in complying with Health and Safety Policies.
  • Understanding of equity and diversity relating to sporting provision.


  • Motivational and mentoring skills, including empathy of working in a student environment
  • Experience of successfully leading others, preferably in both direct supervision of paid employees and of volunteers
  • Excellent organisation skills, with the ability to juggle multiple demands, work under pressure and to tight deadlines when required
  • Experience in club administration
  • IT skills including competence in the use of Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Proven management and leadership skills & experience, with ability to adapt leadership style to different circumstances, but also able to work as a member of a busy multi-functional performance team.
  • Successful track record of developing and managing partnerships - NGBs.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills that build trust, respect and rapport, and creates mutually beneficial relationships with a wide variety of people to influence perceptions and opinions
  • Collaborative in approach, with a desire to contribute to, support and promote the success of others’ projects and achievements
  • Communication: ability to communicate thoughts and ideas in writing or speaking, in a clear, concise and confident manner, to effectively engage, persuade and influence different audiences
  • Flexible in approach and work schedule, including ability to handle ambiguity


  • At least L3 Coaching Certificate (or working towards if relevant other experience).
  • A track record of relevant CPD throughout career to date


  • A proven track record of hockey coaching experience with players competing successfully at a high performance level.
  • A proven experience of developing individual players’ performance plans, including experience in monitoring progress against these plans and amending as required.
  • Demonstrable experience in the successful implementation and oversight of the delivery of performance plans.
  • Demonstrable experience in creating an effective and inclusive environment for the development of talented players and coaches.
  • Experience of leading/working with a MDT support team.
  • An empathy with working within a student environment
  • Energy, commitment and enthusiasm to work within a busy environment, commitments to flexible hours including working outside normal office days and hours - evenings and weekends as required
  • Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area.
