A Professional Rugby Club which is based at Kingspan Stadium, Belfast and plays in the United Rugby Championship and European Rugby Champions Cup. The IRFU (Ulster Branch) is responsible for the administration and development of rugby at all levels throughout the Province.

Ulster Rugby are currently inviting applications for the post of Rugby Participation Officer.

Role Purpose

To provide rugby development services for Rugby Clubs, Primary schools & Secondary schools within the allocated region of Ulster.

Accountable to:

Operationally – Participation Rugby Manager OR Women & Girls’ Development Manager

Functionally – Head of Rugby Development

Contract Status

Specified purpose contract (35 hours per week)

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver rugby participation programmes (for both Males and Females) within community-based settings including the support of curriculum & extra-curricular based rugby modules in Primary & Secondary schools within designated area, encouraging links back to local rugby clubs.
  • Work with clubs to support volunteers and assist them with on-field development.
  • Under the guidance of your line manager deliver blitzes, extravaganzas, competitions and other participation opportunities.
  • Support the delivery of the Ulster Rugby participation programme and other similar initiatives within the region.
  • Under the guidance of your line manager support the delivery of player development programmes where appropriate.
  • Visit Primary & Secondary schools with the aim of promoting and developing all facets of the game of rugby union in a positive, safe & healthy manner.
  • Completion of regular reports in a timely, accurate & competent manner.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date records on all aspects of work.
  • Maintain effective relationships with those detailed in Key Relationships.
  • Portray a competent & professional image of Ulster Rugby at all times.
  • Fulfil all coaching & development obligations throughout the term of the contract.

The duties and responsibilities outlined above are not exhaustive and the post holder may be required to undertake additional duties to meet the needs of the organisation.

Essential Criteria


o Willing to obtain IRFU Stage 1 (Children’s Coaching Course) or Stage 2 (Youth Coaching Course) Coaching Qualification*

* An offer of employment will be made on the condition that the successful candidate attends a course when required


o Demonstrable experience of coaching at Stage 1 or Stage 2 of the LTPD pathway (age 6-15)


o Understanding & commitment to the IRFU Child Safeguarding policy in relation to dealing with underage players

Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to interact positively with colleagues, club volunteers, school teachers & children
  • Good communication skills
  • Good organisation and time management skills
  • Good administration skills with the ability to produce written reports to deadlines


  • Proven ability to work unsupervised o Can appropriately use own initiative
  • Self motivated o Good team player


  • Able to work flexible hours, including weekends & evenings
  • Access to a form of transport insured for business use that will permit the post holder to meet the requirements of the post in full
  • Be prepared to undertake an Access NI check o Eligible to live and work in the UK

Desirable Criteria:

The IRFU (Ulster Branch) reserves the right to enhance criteria to facilitate short-listing and may apply some or all of the desirable criteria listed below:

Currently holds a IRFU Stage 1 (Children’s Coaching Course) or Stage 2 (Youth

Coaching Course) Coaching Qualification (or equivalent)

IRFU Coaching Qualification at Stage 3 LTPD (Senior Coaching Course) (or equivalent)


o o

Previous experience in the delivery of sporting programmes to colleges, clubs & schools

Previous experience delivering female participation programmes


Previous experience of organising, managing & evaluating events
