The Communications Officer (Media) enables the delivery of UK Sport’s Strategic Communications Plan through the day-to-day delivery of UK Sport’s media relations plan and activity. They will also support the wider team with the planning and delivery of strategic communications including writing press releases, penning OpEd articles and developing content for UK Sport’s digital channels.
Working to the Media Lead, the postholder will be responsible for delivering the organisation’s proactive and reactive communications and media relations activities, to protect UK Sport’s reputation and showcase our progress in delivering the greatest decade of extraordinary sporting moments.
The role also supports the operations of the wider External Affairs Team (incorporating activity in the areas of communications, digital, public affairs, and international relations).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the Media Lead to deliver the press office function through well planned, strategically minded and well delivered media activity.
- Work across the wider team, drafting and delivering communications to a range of audiences in a variety of formats and across a range of channels.
- Day-to-day management of the UK Sport press office, handling incoming media enquiries and preparing high quality press releases, statements, Q&As, briefings and media events as required.
- Lead on the delivery of all insights, evaluation and reporting related to our media activity.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with a range of relevant print, online and broadcast media.
- Plan and deliver media campaigns in support of UK Sport’s objectives.
- Monitor the news agenda, spot emerging issues or concerns relevant to UK Sport, and advise on appropriate action.
- As part of the team of communications officers across External Affairs, support the day-to-day operation of UK Sport’s digital channels and assist with wider strategic communications planning and delivery as required.
- Work with colleagues across the organisation to prepare and create integrated communications campaigns that meet their requirements - informing, engaging, activating or inspiring the target audience.
KEY SKILLS, EXPERIENCE & ATTRIBUTES
Essential:
- Significant experience of working in a press office, PR agency, editorial team or similar communications environment.
- Demonstrable experience of planning and delivering successful media campaigns, across a range of media channels.
- Exceptional written and oral communications, including ability to draft high quality copy for a variety of channels and audiences.
- Proven ability to build effective relationships with journalists and to secure, positive, on-message coverage.
- Sound judgement and ability to handle sensitive information.
- Evidence of using creativity to address comms challenges.
- Ability to build strong relationships and credibility to work with key partners and senior colleagues.
- An eye for detail and ability to ensure a planned, audience focused and consistent approach across various communications.
Desirable:
- Knowledge of the sporting landscape & UK Sport’s role in that landscape.
- A strong network of contacts in the sports, social affairs or political media.
- Ability to produce high quality content across a variety of formats and channels.
