The FAI has an exciting opportunity for a Head of IT who will serve as a strategic advisor to the Senior Leadership Team and to help drive the digital transformation of Irish football.

The role will be responsible for the management of the Technology function responsible for collaborating across the organisation to deliver our strategic ambition to ‘embrace digital technologies’.

Job requirements


The organisation is embarking on a significant digital transformation journey and this role will be responsible for the following:

  • IT Strategy: Oversee a team of application, desktop and infrastructure professionals. Developing an ambitious yet achievable plan to enhance our existing infrastructure, working with the Senior Leadership to enable wider digital transformation while retaining a focus on return on investment. Lead and plan technology adoption throughout the organisation and provide insight for the senior leadership into new trends in technology that can further enable the organisation's goals, including preparation of business cases for Board approval.
  • Infrastructure: Oversee the maintenance and evolution of the hardware and networking back end of the FAI IT operations. Previous experience of data centre environments, on premise server deployments, virtualisation technologies, cloud technologies (IaaS, SaaS, PaaS)
  • Application Management:
    • Football Management System (COMET launching Dec 2022): Oversight of this system and its suite of applications that underpin Irish Football.
    • Web Development and Design: Supporting our portfolio of websites including working with our Marketing and Communications teams in scoping and delivering a suite of new sites that meet the current day needs of the game.
    • Microsoft 365 management skills: An in-depth understanding of Microsoft 365 is a must. This must include a great understanding of Microsoft Policies, Modules, Security (endpoint) and Azure Management.
  • Data Management and Security: Implementation of appropriate governance models to ensure the FAI remains GDPR compliant and puts the security of our systems and data at the forefront of decision making
  • Leadership:
    • Provide technical leadership and direction to the organisation, encouraging ambitious yet achievable innovation
    • Assume strategic oversight of critical projects on behalf of the Senior Leadership team employing dynamic Agile and Lean techniques
    • Role model the associations values and champion the development of our culture within the technology team
  • Other Duties:
    • Supporting the FAI workforce in executing their roles in this new hybrid working environment.
    • Prepare annual budget including budgeting purchases of equipment and software.

Skills and Experience

  • Third level qualification in computer science, technology, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in a managerial role in relevant technology environment
  • Experience in delivering change through technology and digital transformation in similar sized organisation,
  • Proven experience of developing, gaining support organisation wide for and implementing robust systems and solutions.
  • Strong knowledge of systems and technologies and passionate about keeping up to date with developments in the industry.
  • Excellent organisational and leadership, communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience in leading & managing projects. Project Management qualification an advantage.
  • Proactive decision maker who can positively influence change
  • Ability to present complex technical information to a variety of audiences
  • Knowledge of standards and best practices relating to IT and Information systems development (e.g. ITIL, ISO 9001, ISO20000, ISO27001, NIST, ENSIA, CoBIT, etc)
  • Detailed knowledge of IT controls and governance procedures including risk management
  • Background in designing/developing IT systems and planning IT implementation
  • Solid understanding of data analysis, budgeting and business operations
  • Superior analytical and problem-solving capabilities
  • A strong strategic and business mindset
  • Experience writing functional requirements to create new tools or refine processes/policies
  • Passionate about understanding football stakeholders to deliver effective products
  • Knowledge of governance best practice and trends in the sport industry
  • A passion for football and a good understanding of the football landscape in Ireland would be beneficial but not essential.
