Role Summary

As a data scientist you will play a critical role in maintaining and shaping the evolution of how data supports and informs BST understanding of performance. We are looking for a practitioner who has the desire to develop and manage our data processes and systems in order to increase our capability to generate performance insight from data. To be successful in this role you should be confident in working with data across the data life cycle, specifically data collection, cleansing, storage and visualisation, and be able to apply this into the Performance support team.

Reporting to the Head of Performance Support (HoPs), this role will support the implementation of our data strategy across the BST programme, working closely with the HoPs, Chief Technical Officer, Sports Science and Medicine Team (SSSM) and central EIS Performance Data Team.

This will be BST first specialist data role, presenting an exciting opportunity to shape the current implementation of data insight within the BST WCP, and the future strategy of how data can best support sailings evolving performance landscape.

Key Areas of Job Role

  • Be a confident practitioner capable of working with a variety of people; including coaches, sailors, technical practitioners and SSSM practitioners.
  • Have experience and competence in working with data through its life cycle; specifically collecting, cleansing, storing, integrating and visualising/reporting
  • Work with the HoPs and Chief Technical officer to identify opportunities and implement solutions that improve the way data is captured and managed.
  • Use analytical tools such as Python and Power BI to efficiently retrieve, manipulate, report and visualise sailing performance data
  • Apply your expertise in data integration, and the presentation of data to key stakeholders by; building, refining and maintaining performance dashboards and reports for use by coaches, practitioners, and senior leadership team (SLT)
  • Support the HoPs and Chief technical officer with the development and delivery of our Data Strategy contributing to the planning and coordination of tasks with colleagues and third-party providers.
  • Contribute to the scoping of data science projects with the wider Performance Support Team aiding the understanding, resources, benefits, and challenges of proposed projects.
  • Support appropriate use and management of NGB file storage systems that enable sharing of information and insight and support online collaboration across the Performance Support Team e.g. Microsoft 365
  • Keep up with the latest developments in the field of data science, exploring the feasibility of applying them in the performance environment
  • Work with EIS Performance data team and designated technical lead to align NGB and performance data streams

  • Able to work autonomously, using one’s own initiative and be comfortable working in a creative, agile/adaptable way with multiple stakeholders
  • A personal desire to develop one’s own practice and thrive in the high-performance environment

For this level of role we would expect the individual to have 1+ years’ experience in a professional role, although this does not preclude applicants without this from applying if they feel they have the necessary knowledge and skills. It is important to the EIS that candidates both have an interest in sport and recognise the importance of promoting and supporting equality, safeguarding and anti-doping within sport.
