Salary: £18,000 per annum plus expenses

Hours: 22.5 hours per week

Annual Leave: 20 days/year

Location: Primarily working from home and on location with athletes but hot desk options available upon request

Start Date: 1st November 2023

The Performance and Pathways Manager role is crucial in developing the Performance Programme to support Scotland’s current generation of talented athletes and building pathways to identify and develop talent for the future. STS is looking for someone to cover this role for a minimum of 6 months for when the current post holder goes on maternity leave.

Who Are Scottish Target Shooting?

Scottish Target Shooting (STS) is a unified governing body created in 2016 to help develop the sport of target shooting in Scotland. As a new governing body, we are looking to have a positive impact on clubs and help individuals of all abilities, across all the various disciplines of the sport. This post is responsible for managing the performance programme, driving performance levels and delivering our performance outcomes. The post will have the opportunity to work with a programme.

What Will Be My Tasks and Responsibilities?

You will be asked to continue driving forward the following areas, supported by STS staff, and directors:

  • Manage the contracted coaches on the Programme
  • Work with the contracted coaches to select and manage the athletes
  • Manage the Programme’s budget
  • Provide reports for internal use to monitor the development of athletes on the Programme
  • Co-ordinate reports for external use to publicise the achievements of athletes on the Programme
  • Co-ordinate team camps
  • Perform the role of Team Manager at competitions when required
  • Work with British Shooting to support a joined-up approach
  • Any other tasks required for the fulfilment of the role

What Are The Terms Of The Role?

The following terms apply:

  • The successful applicant will be required to work evenings and weekends for meeting with Programme athletes and supporting competitions both in and outside of the UK
  • The post is to work an average of 22.5 hours per week from home and on location with athletes, coaches and SIS support staff
  • Sick pay will be made available and will be discussed with the post holder
  • The post holder shall be entitled to 20 days annual leave per year to be agreed in advance with their line manager
  • All reasonable expenses incurred on STS business will be reimbursed
  • The term shall initially be for 6 months with the potential for to be extended if circumstances require and with agreement by both parties

What Are The Authorities & Limitations Of The Role?

Budgets for the year will be produced annually with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) for submission to the Board who will approve and regularly monitor the budget. The COO will provide monthly finance reports to monitor spend against agreed budgets. The role will be authorised to make purchases (or authorise contracted coaches to make purchases) that fall within the agreed budgets and STS purchasing rules. Full guidance on these processes will be provided in the STS Business Strategies and other policies and procedures approved by the STS Board and published on the company’s website.

What Is The Organisational Structure?

The Performance & Pathways Manager shall be recruited by the Board and be accountable to the COO who shall have direct line management responsibility for the staff of STS. The role will line manage the coaches contracted to the programme and will also report to the Performance and Pathways Director. The role will be required to work with AMG performance reps through the Performance & Pathways Group that meets an average of twice a year.

What Knowledge, Skills & Qualities Are Required?

Applicants are not expected to fulfil all the criteria but should be able to demonstrate the majority of the following:

Knowledge & Experience:

  • Experience of performance sport and managing performance programmes
  • Experience of working with partner agencies in developing athletes
  • Experience of managing coaches and athletes

Skills:

  • Clerical and administrative skills for the co-ordination of Programme details
  • Ability to communicate effectively with Programme personnel
  • Ability to compose and produce reports using IT applications (Word, Excel etc.)
  • Ability to set clear goals
  • Ability to work accurately and to tight deadlines
  • Ability to have difficult conversations around selection and de-selection

Personal Qualities:

  • Work on own without detailed instruction
  • Able to work closely with internal colleagues and external agencies
  • Self-motivated demonstrating drive and enthusiasm
  • Flexible, proactive and able to work under pressure
  • Apply discretion in sensitive issues, and maintain confidentiality at all times

Stage 1: All applicants will receive a response confirming receipt of their application. A review will be made of all applications and each applicant will be informed if they have been chosen for stage 2.

Stage 2: Applicant selected for stage 2 will be invited for an interview with a panel appointed by STS. This panel will likely include independent individuals to help support and inform the recruitment process. All candidates will then be contacted to be told if they have been successful or not within 1 week of the interview. The successful candidate will begin at an agreed date. Unsuccessful candidates will be entitled to feedback within 4 weeks of the interview.
