Job Description

The role will support the men’s Rugby Union BUCS programme. The successful candidate will provide match day preparation, acute injury assessment, medical management and emergency pitch side trauma care.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Deliver match day physiotherapy and pitch side trauma support at all home and away fixtures.
  • Provide necessary match day strapping and taping to players.
  • Provide pre-match treatment as required.
  • Maintain detailed clinical records in accordance with GDPR and Northumbria University policies and procedures.
  • Record all injuries in a timely manner on an injury log.
  • Follow RFU concussion guidance for any cases of suspected concussion.
  • Record all cases of suspected concussion through the centralised concussion database.
  • Communicate with the Lead Physiotherapist regarding injuries and treatment plans.
  • Work closely with the Head of Strength and Conditioning to ensure rehabilitation protocols are embedded within all athlete programmes.
  • Organise regular agreed communication with coaching staff to discuss player injury status, rehabilitation plans and return to play timelines.
  • Work with the Lead Physiotherapist to carry out baseline testing on all players using the SCAT 5 protocol.
  • To implement agreed health and safety protocols within physiotherapy delivery.

This Role Description is not intended to be an exhaustive list of duties and will be subject to periodic review by the Student Sport Manager in discussion with the post-holder.

Location & Hours:

  • The post holder will be required to work across multiple sites as well as extensive travel.
  • A flexible approach to working patterns and locations is required.
  • A professional contract for an average of 4-10 hours per week.

The post holder will be required to have a flexible approach and will be required to work some evenings and weekend.

Person Specification:

  • Have at least 3 years’ post graduate physiotherapy experience working in MSK physiotherapy.
  • Have at least 2 years’ experience working as a lead physiotherapist in a contact sport.
  • Experience of working in contact sport and understanding of current concussion management protocols.
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary such as strength and conditioning coaches, sport scientists, sports analysts, nutritionists, and rehabilitation specialists.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with student athletes and coaches, establishing good relationship.
  • Evidence of good administrative, organisational, prioritisation skills and the ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to manage medical situations in high pressure situations.
  • A highly motivated individual with excellent time management skills.
  • Hold a BSc (Hons) in Physiotherapy.
  • Hold a current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council.
  • Hold a CSP Membership cover including Professional Indemnity Cover.
  • Have a valid Immediate Care in Sport (ICIS) Level 1 or industry equivalent.
  • Have a valid Basic Life Support Qualification (inc CPR and AED).
  • Have a valid UK Anti-Doping Clean Sport Advisor Qualification.


  • Have at least 2 years experience working in sport medicine.
  • Have a valid Immediate Care in Sport (ICIS) Level 2 or industry equivalent.
