About the Role
The Head of Rugby Union will be the lead coach for the men’s BUCS 1st team, working with a multidisciplinary team to achieve success within BUCS. The role will lead the recruitment and management of a team of casual coaches delivering on the wider rugby union programme.
Reporting into the Student Sport Manager the role will play an integral part in the strategic direction of the sport within the University.
About the team
The role will join Northumbria Sport, a core department within Campus Services. Northumbria Sport is responsible for delivering an excellent student experience through our range of sport, fitness and wellbeing programmes.
The role will be located across a number of sites including Sport Central, Coach Lane and a range of external venues.
About you
We are looking for a forward-thinking individual, with an exceptional background in coaching that can drive forward a successful performance programme, with an ambition to be a leading University in the UK for student rugby union.
To be successful in the role you will have experience of coaching and recruiting high level players, a strong knowledge of Higher Education sporting structures and purposes, the ability to enthuse and inspire players to achieve.
Responsibilities
- To lead the development of the rugby union programme at Northumbria University ensuring a pathway of opportunity for participation at all levels.
- To develop strategic and annual plans for the growth and development of rugby union at all levels within Northumbria University.
- To act as the Head Coach for Northumbria University men’s BUCS 1st team leading all training, team selection and fixtures.
- To deliver safe, effective and relevant coaching sessions to enable the advancement of skill and performance of squads and individual players.
- To act as a positive and professional role model, displaying the highest standards of coaching conduct at all times promoting an enjoyable and inclusive atmosphere.
- To review, manage and support a team of Rugby Union coaches providing mentoring and development support.
- To foster productive working relationships and ensure effective communication with other members of Northumbria Sport and key external stakeholders.
- To ensure all talented student athletes have individualised development plans to support the fundamental areas of welfare and development.
- To provide regular updates to the Student Sport Manager on agreed targets.
- To act as the main point of contact for all rugby union enquiries.
- To create and implement a strategic recruitment plan aimed at recruiting talented student athletes.
- To play a lead role in driving a student-centered, inter-disciplinary approach ensuring key support services are integrated within the programme.
- To implement agreed health and safety protocols within rugby union delivery.
- To adopt a pro-active, self-directed approach to continuing professional development.
Qualifications
- Hold a Level 2 qualified with a willingness to work towards a Level 3 qualification within 12 months of appointment.
- Undergraduate degree, preferably in a discipline relevant to the role.
- Hold a valid UK Anti-Doping Advisor Qualification.
- Hold a valid Emergency First Aid Qualification.
