Millfield Prep School are seeking to employ two Tennis Coaching Intern for the 2023-24 Academic Year to contribute to our sports, physical education and boardingprogrammes. An Intern placement year in the sports department of Millfield Prep School will provide an unrivalled opportunity to work at one of the UK’s leading Prep Schools.

Millfield Prep School (MPS) is an independent co-educational school with outstanding sports facilities and situated by the famous Glastonbury Tor. There are 400 children ranging in age from 2 – 13yrs, with about a third of these children boarding. We have outstanding facilities and a vibrant multisport environment.

Sports Interns will have the opportunity to develop some of the knowledge and skills gained previously either from schooling or from an Undergraduate degree. Successful candidates should be confident, reliable and have good interpersonal skills as well as showing a willingness to be involved in all areas of school life.

The Tennis Intern would be responsible for supporting the Performance Tennis Coaches with academy players in an Assistant Coach and pro-hitting capacity. There will be the opportunity to travel to tournaments with the players and coaches. Part of the role will consist of delivering private lessons to players in the development/performance programmes. Interns also have an option of getting involved with other areas of the school. For example, the Pre Prep Department, boarding, or any academic department which would be beneficial to students wishing to pursue a PGCE or undergraduate studies.

The posts run for a full academic year from September through June, with breaks for School holidays. Remuneration is £9,459.60 per annum, plus board and lodging during term time and a contribution towards professional development (e.g. coaching course). In addition to contributing to the above areas, interns will gain experience in boarding houses and help supervise recreation times.

Applicants will have participated regularly to a good standard and ideally hold coaching qualifications in relevant activities.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Support training programmes that reflect the needs of the sport and the individual and that are in line with the pupil’s sporting and educational programme.
  • Educate pupils in their understanding of sports principles whilst providing opportunities to develop a rounded athletic skillset and sports specific physical qualities.
  • Work with the Head of Sport and Tutor in Charge in building a strong culture of development within Millfield Sport and develop upon the framework of best practice.
  • Assist sports coaches and teaching staff in sport principles and practices.
  • Work collaboratively with fellow support staff and sports coaches, and communicate diligently with staff, parents and the school as required regarding pupils’ training and development.
  • Contributing to and facilitating communication of relevant news and developments internally and externally, including within Millfield Sport, through the school’s media department, with parents, and within the broader Millfield communities.
  • Contribute to an effective athletic development structure, and engage actively in continuous personal development and the development of Millfield Sport.
  • Facilitating the health and wellbeing of boarding students via designated school duties and processes, as agreed with the Director of Sport and Director of Boarding
  • Special projects as directed by the Director of Sport.
  • Requirement to work outside normal hours at the request of the Director of Sport with reasonable notice.
  • Assist in the delivery of the PE programme at Millfield Prep School
  • Supervise recreational sports activities as part of the multie sport afternoons.

Person Specification:

The Sports Intern will have:

  • A degree in Sports Science (or working towards) or a related coaching discipline. Or a placement for the year as part of a sandwich course.
  • Coaching qualifications to NGB minimum standards.
  • Coaching experience in athletic development and working with children.
  • Excellent knowledge of long-term development practices for young male and female athletes.
  • Outstanding communication skills in a variety of environments and media.
  • Well-developed administrative and organisational skills.
