The Purpose:
Working with the Corporate Communications Manager, this person is responsible for real time media relations, issues management, club media enquiries and proactive media and fan engagement, both nationally and internationally. This includes managing relationships with football, sport business, and international media contacts, and supporting various club departments in their external communications and relationships with key stakeholders, community organisations and governing bodies.
The Role:
- Daily real-time media monitoring and internal reporting of club and international football issues in print, broadcast, and social media.
- Media and public relations engagement to reach the club’s target audiences.
- Managing and executing communications projects and campaigns to engage media on key club stories and issues
- Drafting written content including: Press releases, statements, speeches, letters, transcripts, web stories, key messages and reports
- Supporting various club departments in their external communications and relationships with key stakeholders, including fans, community organisations and governing bodies
- Working closely with operational departments (e.g. ticketing, security on proactive and reactive communications that impact the fans and wider club stakeholders
- Helping to drive and communicate the club’s overall fan engagement activity
- Evaluating and capturing evidence including case studies of our fan engagement activity
- Supporting the planning and delivery of engagement activity including cross-department working to ensure assets developed
- Event activity and drafting post event communications
- Drafting of season ticket holder communications
- Working to build media and stakeholder relationships through club events, emails, calls, meetings, briefings and sport industry events
- Preparing club spokespeople for media interviews and other external engagements, such as conferences and speeches; organise media training where necessary
- Producing media coverage reports and analysis for various club departments
- Supporting club departments on award submissions.
- Communicating the club’s CSR activities in areas such as equality, diversity and inclusion, environmental sustainability and community engagement
The Person:
- Excellent skills in written and verbal communications.
- Relevant professional experience in communications, media and public relations.
- Excellent knowledge of the media landscape, including football, sport and international media.
- Prior experience at a football club or relevant sporting body would be an advantage, however a full understanding of the unique dynamics of a globally leading football club and the culture of Manchester United is required
- Excellent knowledge of social media, including monitoring tools.
- Proven ability to engage with media to pitch stories and secure positive media coverage.
- Experience in compiling media coverage reports and analysis.
- Experience in maintaining contacts databases.
- Experience in public affairs and stakeholder relations an advantage.
- Ability to work and collaborate across departments in a complex organisation, and communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, including senior leaders.
