About the role

Integrating padel into the LTA in 2019 was the first step in what we hope will be a bright future for padel. It provided an immediate platform to facilitate the organic growth of the sport, with tennis venues throughout Great Britain already exploring the potential opportunities it can bring to a facility.

Following this initial growth, we are now at a point where we can start to focus on player development and a performance pathway.

The Padel Team ‘s 5-year performance aspirational goals are:

a) To develop a domestic framework that supports nationally ranked players in a variety of categories.

b) To develop a set of players that can represent Great Britain at the highest level of the professional game.

Reporting to the Head of Padel the Padel Performance Manager will be responsible for oversight of the development programme of LTA Supported Padel players to assist them in reaching the elite end of the game. They will also lead and manage National Team activity, liaising with National Coaches in a variety of categories, from juniors to seniors. The Padel Performance Manager will also take a lead role in developing a domestic framework of training venues, LTA led training activity and competitions to support younger, emerging talent now and into the future. A key aspect of the role will be to support key performance Padel training venues around the country to deliver talent activity, e.g., talent identification and development, developing a performance workforce.

Key Accountabilities

Oversee the performance programmes of LTA supported padel players and their personal teams

  • Manage the selection process for LTA supported padel players
  • Act as the LTA National Coach for a group of assigned players, being the lead point of contact between the player and the LTA, to ensure the impact of support resources are maximally impacting the quality of training and competition programmes
  • Ensure all assigned players have agreed and recorded Individual Development Plans (IDP’s) that drive player development and are reviewed regularly
  • Ensure all assigned players are inducted onto their support programme on an annual basis
  • Maintain a regular dialogue with players, parents, and coaches, completing twice yearly performance review meetings and offering additional support & guidance where needed
  • Act as a point-of-contact and build working relationship with player training bases, both domestic and international, offering support & guidance where needed
  • Provide coaching cover for the player’s personal coach if / when required and agreed with the Head of Padel
  • Manage wild card allocations, selections, and other responsibilities
  • Attend key domestic and international tournaments

Develop Domestic Framework and Player Pathway

  • Contribute to the development of the LTA performance padel strategy, providing innovative ideas and finding solutions to key challenges
  • Work as part of a team to continually improve the Domestic Framework during its start-up phase.
  • Lead on projects specifically focused on improving the development trajectory of players on the Player Pathway.
  • Undertake additional administrative tasks that may be required to ensure that processes are completed, and programme activity is delivered with excellence.
  • Undertake formal and informal personal development as appropriate to meet the demands of the role.

Lead National Training Camps and LTA Official Teams and trips (for all age group categories)

  • Manage the annual budget and planning of the National Padel Team’s activity, including camps and trips
  • Lead the delivery and selection process for camps and trips
  • Manage the reporting system to feedback to players, coaches, and parents
  • Manage the requirements of contractors in the delivery of camps and trips
  • Regularly scout aspiring players in a variety of categories at National and International tournaments in accordance with any processes relating to the selection and development of players.
  • Manage the selection process for National Teams,
  • Maintain an awareness of current international standards through attendance at key international events
  • Provide clear and consistent communication with the wider group of players, to include parents and coaches
  • Provide regular support and challenge to an allocated number of Regional Player Development Centres to ensure effective delivery at those programmes receiving LTA investment.

Person Specification

Previous Experience of:

  • Nurturing the development of high potential athletes of both genders and supporting them to thrive at the professional level
  • Building and managing relationships of trust and influence with aspiring players, personal coaches, and families
  • Using effective communication skills to influence players, coaches and parents
  • Working with National Coaches to deliver training camps and international travel to tournaments for groups of players, which provide high levels of individual support and challenge from a multi-disciplinary perspective
  • Working with a team of coaches and practitioners to plan and review player development including, individual development plans, training programmes and tournament schedules.
