The British Triathlon Federation World Class Programmes are at a crucial stage in preparing athletes for medal winning performances at the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games, and in delivering its 12-year performance strategy to Develop People and Deliver Excellence to Inspire Growth. Second only to coaching, science and medicine practitioners have a central role to play in equipping British triathletes and Paratriathletes for success in Paris and beyond.

The EIS sits In a pivotal role in the UK within high performance sport and employs a network of 400 people providing services to all sports. This role’s work is embedded exclusively in British Triathlon supporting ever ambitious performances on the world stage at Paris 2024 and beyond. The role will focus on working with the Performance Director and the Senior Leadership Team to ensure that performance support - specifically those services relating to athlete health - is aligned to performance plans and developing and delivering the programmes' strategic priorities.

The HoPS role traditionally leads both science and medicine disciplines. However, British Triathlon believe a more tailored approach is required to lead both science and medicine and have separated the leadership of both science and medicine disciplines into two distinct roles.


Working side-by-side with the Head of Performance Science Services, this role’s primary focus with be to provide leadership, management and development of the Olympic and Paralympic WCP health services (including physical and mental health) to support athlete performance and the delivery of its strategy.

  • Oversee the design, implementation, resource and management of athlete health services to ensure world-leading sports therapy and medicine provision for the Olympic and Paralympic WCP.
  • Provide leadership and line-management to EIS employed BTF physiotherapy and medical practitioners.
  • Ensure physiotherapy and medical practices adhere to high professional standards and relevant professional codes of conduct.
  • Support the physiotherapy and medical practitioners in their personal, professional, and technical development.
  • Design and oversee the delivery of athlete health strategies and projects including:
  • BTF Health Strategy and Mental health strategy
  • BTF Winter health strategy
  • BTF Cardiac screening
  • BTF Concussion protocols.
  • Ensure that BTF’s clinical governance protocols are consistently industry leading and fit-for-purpose.
  • Oversee/coordinate injury/illness case management (for physical and mental health issues) across Olympic and Paralympic athlete populations.
  • Drive the creation and implementation of a long-term Sports Science and Medicine Strategy along with the Performance Director and Head of Sport Science.
  • Lead on the relationship with the EIS Athlete Health team and on implementation of any system-wide athlete health protocols/strategies.
  • Liaise with EIS Business Services (Finance and Human Resources) to provide a point of-contact between EIS and NGB for medical services.
