Nature and scope:

Inclusivity is critical to our purpose. It is the thread that runs through our values, both for those who enjoy our game already, and those we are taking the game to. Being more inclusive will foster diversity, which in turn will help better Rugby Union in England.

The RFU has a responsibility to the game to set a high standard for inclusion, fairness and equality of opportunity. We are a membership organisation which needs to ensure there are no barriers to our members being welcomed and having their voices heard.

Our research shows that rugby is under-represented in terms of participation and interest amongst many groups. Reversing this, and building greater inclusivity will allow us to enrich lives and introduce more people to rugby union – future-proofing the game.

We will drive greater inclusion in Rugby Union through committing to understanding, building and advocating change across four fundamental pillars; Fans, Followers and Partners, Employees and Board, Game Play and Game Leadership.

In each, we will focus on the following actions:

  • Appreciating people – their data and insights
  • Delivering education and training offerings across the game and engaging all communities –involved and new
  • And championing the importance of inclusive change.

One of our strategic objectives focuses on Inclusion & Diversity, something that is inextricably linked to the achievement of our other strategic objectives. We want rugby in England to reflect the diversity of society and to continue to create an inclusive environment for all.

As such, the RFU is looking for an Inclusion and Diversity Officer to support and work on a number of key initiatives that will enable the successful delivery of this objective.

This is a unique role that sits within the wider Business Operations team led by Chief Financial and Operating Officer, Sue Day, so is cross-functional in scope, design and delivery. You will report in the Inclusion and Diversity Director and work closely with the existing Inclusion and Diversity Officer.


  • Work across four pillars which underpin the I&D strategy, focussing on data, engagement and communications
  • Coordinate and report on projects, within the Inclusion and Diversity objective, required to effect strategic change
  • Work closely with the Strategy and Insights team to understand trends in the game and ensure they are being reflected in the work we do
  • Support the development of a communication strategy which tells the story of journey we are on, the impact we are having and highlights the ambitions we have set
  • Support the design and delivery of I&D focussed education and training across all pillars of the I&D strategy
  • Build relationships and partnerships with a diverse range of communities and stakeholders to ensure their voices are being heard
  • Actively collaborate with colleagues to contribute to the development and delivery of the I&D plans
  • Assess the latest sector and subject trends, data and guidance to assist the shaping of future plans and partnerships
  • Undertake such other duties as maybe required from time to time as are consistent with the responsibilities of the post and the needs of the RFU
  • Act as an ambassador for, and promote the best interests of the RFU, including the promotion of the RFU core values and BACK culture
  • Undertake such other duties as may be required from time to time as are consistent with the responsibilities of the post and the needs of the organisation

Person Specification

Qualifications, skills & experience:


  • Experience in a similar or relevant role e.g. community development, charity campaigns, PR/communications
  • Comfortable analysing data and presenting themes and recommendations in a clear and creative way
  • Confident engaging and communicating with diverse communities, both internally and externally
  • Good understanding of internal and external communication, both written and verbal
  • Experience in crafting I&D focused education and training programmes
  • Good stakeholder management experience
  • Confident in influencing, consensus building, and sustaining relationships with the ability to work collaboratively
  • Strong organisation and time management skills
  • Ability to manage and prioritise multiple tasks and projects
  • High level of attention to detail
  • Committed to driving forward inclusion in your role and day-to-day behaviours
  • Committed to actively contributing to and building an inclusive BACK culture in your role and day to day behaviours.
