We are seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to the role of Athletic Development Coach for late August 2022. This is a new full-time post to support the strategic development of our ambitious sports programme.

Our Mission

Clongowes Wood College was founded in 1814 and is one of Ireland’s oldest and most successful boarding schools with an enrolment of c.440. We continue today under the College’s motto: aeterna non caduca, striving for the lasting (eternal) values and not the ephemeral ones.

We are committed to the provision of the highest quality Catholic education in the Jesuit tradition. Our mission is to educate students according to the highest standards of Jesuit schooling and the values of the Gospel as expressed in The Characteristics of Jesuit Education and the more recent A Living Tradition in the 21st Century. It is our fidelity to Clongowes’ Jesuit mission and Christian teaching that stand us in good stead in the demanding times we live in and the challenges which lie ahead.

Living together in a boarding school gives the opportunity to develop a real sense of family and to fulfil one of the aims of Jesuit education to become a man for others. The school strives to ensure that cura personalis, the importance of looking after and caring for the individual, is a strong element in everything that we do. We are dedicated to forming young leaders whose core will be the mission of the Gospel: reconciliation with justice and compassionate care for all creation.

The Person

The successful applicant will be an enthusiastic, well-qualified and suitably experienced coach who has a proven track record in the athletic development of young sportsmen. The successful candidate is also likely to possess the following attributes:

  • Ability to promote our aims and values as a Catholic boarding school in the Jesuit tradition, understanding the importance of nurturing our ethos and being a role model for all.
  • A collaborative approach and a ‘team player’ with the capacity to build strong relationships with boys, parents and colleagues.
  • An excellent communicator and good listener, with strong organisational skills. An able administrator capable of managing the day-to-day requirements of this role.
  • Flexibility to adapt to the changing circumstances of a busy boarding school environment.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and the welfare of young people.

The Post

The Athletic Development Coach will work closely with the Director of Rugby and the Director of Sport.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Devise and implement an Athletic Development programme for boys across the 12 – 18 age range, and periodically evaluate its effectiveness.
  • Provide excellent coaching and programming skills for rugby-specific conditioning, and for other sports. Promote the highest standards of physical activity throughout all teams.
  • Test, assess and report on individual player progress, particularly our Junior and Senior Cup players, using up-to-date knowledge and procedures. This will include over the summer break for our JCT and SCT, mostly remotely due to our boarding school nature.
  • Lead relevant match-day routines in conjunction with the coaches of the JCT and SCT.
  • Provide excellent coaching and programming skills with regard to prevention and recovery from injury. This will include liaising with the school physiotherapists, nurses and doctor.
  • Draw up and present an annual development plan

From time-to-time, the job description may be reviewed to reflect or anticipate changes in the College’s requirements, and if it is necessary to adjust this, those involved will be consulted.
