The apprenticeship
We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic Community Coach, with a passion for physical activity and healthy lifestyles, to gain their Level 2 Community Activator Coach qualification, whilst employed within the Participation Team at British Cycling working on the Commonwealth Games Legacy Plan in the West Midlands.
This apprenticeship is an 18-month programme of learning, gaining meaningful qualifications, whilst having full support and mentoring based on your individual needs.
Coaches who finish this programme go on to do full and part time coaching roles, further qualifications, Level 3 apprenticeships and employment in other sectors.
What you’ll be doing
You will focus your energy on the British Cycling’s West Midlands Commonwealth Games Legacy Plan, providing:
- Coaching support to British Cycling’s City Academy Programme.
- Supporting the Commonwealth Games Activation Plan.
- Leading and supporting the development, design and implementation of the ‘DNA of Cycling Skills’ award for young people.
You will do c. 28 hours of planning and delivery each week, likely shadowing or holding an assistant role initially, and will also be involved in administration, monitoring and evaluation. You will attend c. 7 hours (1 day) of education each week.
What you’ll need (Essential):
- Skills and experience in sports coaching, and the ability to make learning fun.
- Excellent planning and organisation skills, and the ability to work in a team or on your own.
- Ability to motivate and inspire, relating well to others and being a positive role model.
- ICT literacy.
- An aptitude, interest and some competency in digital, including social media.
- A positive, enthusiastic attitude.
Training delivered (1 day a week):
- Level 2 Community Activator Coach qualification.
- Coach Core specific modules and workshops.
- Functional Skills in English and Maths (if required).

Include in Your CV / Covering Letter
- Details about your education – include any GCSE (or equivalent) results in Maths and English, and tell us if you hold a Higher National Diploma, Degree or equivalent Level 4 qualification.

Pointers for Filming:
Planning
- Plan what you are going to say.
- Check your phone camera is set to a high resolution – ideally 1920p x 1080p.
- Aim to be in a quiet environment with somewhere to prop your phone securely in landscape position.
- Aim to be close to the camera.
When Recording
Do a quick test to check:
- The microphone is picking you up.
- Light is shining on your face and isn’t coming from behind.
- Your background is uncluttered.
- Try to feel comfortable and confident and look directly into the lens of the camera and speak clearly.
- Do a few takes to get it right.
Sharing
- Rewatch the whole video to check for any problems.
- Use free editing software on your phone to trim the beginning and end of the clip.
