Core Responsibilities

  • Communicate and promote the Academy culture creating an elite environment for the development of young players.
  • Have consistently high standards.
  • Communicate and engage with parents/guardians where appropriate.
  • Attend all professional development events.
  • Actively engage in a fully functioning competency framework and integrated appraisal process.
  • Monitor the well-being of Academy players at all times liaising with the Club Safeguarding Manager.
  • Ensure compliance with all the Policies and Procedures contained within the Staff Handbook, paying particular regard to the Equal Opportunities Policy and Health & Safety Policy and procedures at all times.
  • To drive the vision of the Academy through strategic planning, operational management and good leadership of people.
  • To provide leadership to all areas of the Academy so that it is able to deliver well rounded footballers into the professional game.

Role Responsibilities

  • Lead on recruitment for all non-football staff and create a staff succession plan for the Academy.
  • Ensure the Academy day to day operation is managed effectively with administration and logistics of all training, fixtures and schedules completed.
  • To implement an operational performance plan to deliver the strategic objectives based on Academy KPI outputs and EPPP requirements. To review these KPIs with all Academy management and monitor and adapt plans to achieve these KPIs as necessary.
  • Deliver all activity within the agreed budget set by the Board. To cascade budgets to individual department heads and provide regular management reporting.
  • Manage all football staff so they know what is required of them and can achieve their goals through regular performance management, team meetings and regular 1:1 meetings. To address and manage underperformance.
  • Ensure departmental and MDT meetings are scheduled in accordance with the EFL YD rules and in line with the APP to secure the successful running of the Academy.
  • To attend weekly staff meetings on the Academy programme in all phases and co-lead a monthly Academy Management meeting.
  • Keep up to date with EFL/FA/LFE requirements and ensure Academy is compliant.
  • Manage the EPPP Audit process. Ensure that all EPPP audit criteria are monitored and implemented, and any action points are acted upon.
  • To ensure all policies, practices and procedures relating to Youth Development and Safeguarding of young people are implemented and updated annually.
  • Deliver expected services to players and their families through the creation of a Player Charter, delivery of education and welfare standards and development of a strategy to help players who leave the club.
  • To ensure the Academy philosophies and values are adhered to by coaches, players and parents across all phases of the performance pathway.
  • Oversee the audit cycle and lead on the preparation process to meet the needs of the audit process.
  • Deliver player / parent induction evening at the start of the season.
  • Oversee match day preparations for youth and schoolboy games.
  • Manage and compile APP.
  • Meet regularly with EFL Regional Manager.
  • Ensure a satisfactory exit policy is in place for all players.
  • Manage all trips and tours, both domestic and international.

Key Skills & Experience


Essential Requirements

  • Demonstratable experience of working in a professional football academy or educational environment previously.
  • FA Safeguarding certificate.
  • Mental Health First Aid.
  • Valid Driving Licence.

  • Experience working with young people aged 9-18 years and understand the emotional and well-being challenges they face.
  • High levels of Emotional Intelligence.
  • Strong verbal and written skills.
  • Good experience of managing projects with a variety of stakeholders.
  • Managing and Leading a Multi-Diaciplinary Team.
  • Previous Management in elite sport.
  • Excellent computer literacy.
  • Highly organised.

Terms of Appointment

  • 37.5 hours per week.
  • 20 days annual leave (rising by 1 day per completed year of service, up to a maximum of 25 days, plus 8 statutory bank holidays).
  • 6-month probation period.
