Competitions Development Manager

We’re looking for an events development manager to join our Competitions team at the Angling Trust. Your mission will be to deliver our gold standard competitions across coarse, sea, and game disciplines.

Working closely with our Head of Competitions and other Competitions Development Managers, you’ll manage the development of domestic, national, and international competitions and events as well as support Team England activities—collaborating with team members, managers, and other angling governing bodies.

This is a permanent, full-time role that suits a motivated events development manager who’d like to work alongside a very passionate and supportive team responsible for gold standard competition delivery within a flexible and family-friendly organisation.

You’ll need to have a driving licence and access to your own vehicle as you will be attending competitions and events across the country. Our development managers regularly work outside office hours—you must be willing and able to work early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

What you’ll be doing

  • Planning and delivering angling competitions in line with our business plan with the goal of achieving excellence in competition delivery as well as growth in our programme and memberships—you’ll endeavour to expand the size and diversity of our competition programme, retain existing competition anglers, and increase the number of new anglers participating in Angling Trust competitions
  • Working as an integral part of the operational delivery of the annual competitions calendar, you’ll organise and lead angling competitions—handling the planning and technical requirements, managing competition organisers and volunteers, and liaising with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure gold standard competition delivery
  • Promoting Angling Trust and our competitions through social media and personal engagement with anglers on the bankside, becoming a recognised face of Angling Trust competitions—you’ll coordinate the marketing and communications of national competitions programmes as well as create and distribute information on competitions and Team England via press releases, websites, video content, and social media platforms
  • Contributing to the preparation and monitoring of annual competitions budgets—you’ll regularly provide prompt and precise information and reports to the Head of Competitions

Who you are

  • You’re a charismatic development manager with impressive communication skills and a proven ability to build strong, positive internal and external relationships
  • You’re self-motivated and can work independently within a small team—you’ll be happy to manage a varied workload and ready to pivot with changing priorities
  • Event organisation and promotion are some of your strengths and you’re tech savvy, so you know your way around CRM systems, Wordpress, social media platforms, and SharePoint
  • You’re reliable, capable, confident, and detail-oriented with a proactive attitude—and willing to own your continuous professional development

What will make you stand out

What’s in it for you

  • Keen angler or competition angler
  • Knowledge of types of fish and fish species
  • Understanding of angling competitions rules and regulations
  • Experience managing event organisers and volunteers
  • Salary of £28-30k per annum dependent on experience, plus contributory pension
  • Hybrid (remote, field, office—as required) with a desk in our Ilkeston (Derbyshire) office
  • Flexible working across 37.5 hours per week (regular evening and weekend work)
  • 25 days holiday (plus public holidays) later rising every year up to 28 days
  • Laptop and telephone as well as any mileage, expenses, and TOIL

Who we are

The Angling Trust is the national governing body in England representing fishing—one of the country’s largest participation sports. We are a not-for-profit organisation with a mission to fight for fish, fishing, and the environment—creating opportunities for all within society to experience fishing in a healthy aquatic world.

We collaborate with Fish Legal, a separate membership association that uses the law to protect the rights of its members throughout the UK whilst fighting pollution and damage or other threats to the water environment.

This is an exciting opportunity for you to join a team responsible for the development and administration of domestic, national, and international competitions and events—handling the financial reporting and administration of the competitive event programme, supporting competitions committees and the England national teams, liaising with competitions volunteers across game, coarse, and sea angling, as well as managing the marketing and communications of competitions.
