Alpine Racing have placed Computational Fluid Dynamics at the heart of our aerodynamics development as we pursue the ultimate of on-track performance by exploiting cutting edge computational technologies, data analysis and engineering modelling techniques.

We are looking for a research software engineer to join our CFD group and help us productionise and optimise our CFD processes so that we maintain our grid-leading efficiency. On track performance can be enhanced by extracting more from our CFD than our competitors; we seek to become champions of efficiency and robustness in our production processes.

Research Software Engineer (CFD) – The Role


The CFD pipeline takes as its input some surfaces from CAD packages and provides as its basic output the pressure and velocity fields around those input surfaces. The role of the Research Software Engineer (CFD) is to automate the CFD pipeline in a way that is robust, repeatable and efficient. From dealing with tessellated surfaces all the way to presentation and visualisation of huge datasets, our software and systems require careful consideration such that the pipeline is fit for purpose, both now and in the future.

Research Software Engineer (CFD) – The Person


Within a fast-changing regulatory environment and a highly competitive industry, this is a role that contributes quite significantly to car performance. The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate a background involving developing pipelines for CAE development, and will ideally have experience with HPC. Experience of open source research codes and development tools are essential.

The skills required are:

  • Degree level education in engineering, mathematics or natural sciences. A PhD is ideal but not essential.
  • Excellent understanding of computational science; Python is essential, knowledge of c++ would be advantageous. Relevant experience with modern DB technologies, fast-access file formats, HPC and scheduling is essential, as is building large packages that depend upon MPI, using up to date package management systems. Cloud experience would be beneficial; experience of collaborative software development is essential.
  • Skilled in trouble-shooting and problem solving.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Capable to work under pressure and to tight timescales.
