Within the Engineering Office we have a rare opportunity a Principal Electronics Design Engineer who will be responsible for adding significant performance to the electronic systems of the car.
Principal Electronics Design Engineer - The Role
Reporting to the Electronics Senior Design Engineer, the Principal Engineer will be the technical lead for the design and specification of electronics for current and future race car programmes, and the implementation of development technologies in accordance with the F1 (Formula 1) technical regulations.
Key Accountabilities include:
- Operate as the technical lead for on-car, off-car, rig, and wind tunnel projects - collaborating with project members and other engineering disciplines to accurately determine requirements for electronic developments and designs.
- Perform the role of subject matter expert for the implementation of measurement technologies to improve and protect data quality.
- Identify and quote for required development activities to assist program management in maintaining project schedules.
- Provide technical support to other members of the team in the completion of their design/development activities.
- Research technologies in the electronics industry that are relevant to improving performance and reliability.
- Specification, testing and benchmarking of commercial sensor technologies to fit measurement requirements.
- Development of in-house sensor & car-infrastructure schematics, firmware, and PCB/A layouts, including detailed documentation and specifications to communicate capabilities to the wider team.
- Diagnosis and rectification of electronics related issues and reported faults.
- Documentation of ideas, project progress, specifications & validation/test procedures to the Alpine standards.
- Occasional trackside attendance to ensure development projects are managed and delivered successfully.
Principal Electronics Design Engineer- The Person
The successful candidate will hold a degree or equivalent in Electronic Engineering. They will have a thorough understanding of Engineering first principles, leading to well justified engineering decisions and providing confidence in their approach.
In addition they will have:
- A minimum of 10 years Electronics design/development experience in an appropriate discipline. Previous experience in a high-level motorsport environment not essential.
- Embedded microcontroller, mixed signal, and analogue electronics design skills.
- Advanced knowledge of measurement technology principles and their application in the context of sensor specification.
- Effective bring up, test and diagnosis of electronics hardware designs and implementation of firmware.
- Full lifecycle electronics development experience from concept to final product design and build and test of prototypes.
- Advanced knowledge in schematic generation and multi-layer PCB design in Altium or similar.Skills in embedded C programming for 8051 microcontrollers, STM32 & similar architectures.
- Experience of data analysis tools such as ATLAS/Dewesoft.
