The Sports Science Lead will provide the Adelaide Football Club with current best practice sports science services to optimise training, match performance and drive innovation across AFL, AFLW and SANFL programs.

Job Profile

  • Responsible for the Real-time capture, interpretation, analysis and data-basing of training and performance GPS, RPE, HR and other physiological and performance data.
  • Implement and prescribe best practice recovery science to enhance and accelerate player recovery.
  • Supervise Sports Science staff across AFL, AFLW and SANFL programs
  • Generate detailed raw GPS training and match performance data
  • Interpret and provide physiological and performance feedback to AFC medical, high performance and coaching staff of player status.
  • Collaborate with established network of professional scientists, strength and conditioning and medical staff.
  • Conduct applied physiological research and develop novel fatigue monitoring techniques.
  • Perform match day GPS duties, including the efficient interpretation of real-time GPS data to underpin player rotations.
  • Clearly and concisely communicate data visualisation findings to stakeholders with varying technical backgrounds.

What are we looking for?

Essential Qualifications

  • Tertiary qualifications in Sports Science or related field
  • Accreditation in relevant Sport Science Body (e.g., AESS, ASCA, UKSCA, BASES, NSCA)

Desirable Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Sports Science or related field

Essential Experience & Skills

  • At least 5 years’ experience working with elite athletes in an inter-disciplinary team.
  • Expertise in sports science program databasing using appropriate databasing/visualisation software.
  • Extensive understanding of sport science and related disciplines, including their impact on athletic performance.
  • Thorough knowledge of sport science assessment items, including but not limited to GPS, HR technology, VALD, GymAware, force platforms etc.
  • Proficiency in data visualisation appropriate packages (Tableau, Power BI etc).
  • Ability to scientifically validate the methodology of test protocols and other relevant scientific data.
  • Experience in conducting scientifically underpinned assessment, monitoring and evaluation procedures.
  • Experience of using data management systems to ensure the secure and efficient storage of monitoring and evaluation data.
  • Experience in computer programming language (R, Python etc)
  • Competence in data visualisation tools (Tableau, Power Bi etc)
  • A confident decision-maker.
  • Able to communicate clearly and effectively with players and staff at all levels, with absolute discretion.

Desired Experience & Skills

  • Experience in leading a sports science team in elite performance setting.
  • On-field/strength and conditioning gym program delivery experience.

Essential Requirements

  • Human Movement / Coaching / Exercise / Sports Science Degree
  • Tertiary qualifications in Sports Science or related field
  • Accreditation in relevant Sport Science Body (e.g., AESS, ASCA, UKSCA, BASES, NSCA)

Desirable Criteria

  • National Police / Criminal History Check
  • Working with Children / Working with Vulnerable People Check
  • Postgraduate qualification in Sports Science or related field
